What Are the Benefits of
Hernia Surgery?
If your hernia is symptomatic and the discomfort it causes interferes with your daily activity, then let us help to improve your quality of life. Our hernia repairs alleviate aching discomfort and prevent a lifestyle change by getting you back to your usual activities.
Hernia repair is the most common surgery in the UK, with over 120,000 operation performed each year. The number of people with hernias could be higher as they don’t always cause symptoms. Studies show that 70-80% of hernia patients without symptoms will develop activity-limiting symptoms with pain requiring surgery within approximately 18 months.
Repairing your hernia means stopping it from negatively affecting your life, alleviating discomfort, and minimising the risk if it recurring.
What are the benefits of hernia surgery?
Having your hernia repaired can help improve your quality of life in a number of ways:
Repair stops the hernia from getting worse. Worsening symptoms can include aching/discomfort, increased pain, inability to perform activities, and possibility for the hernia to become difficult or impossible to reduce.
At 8 weeks post surgery, nearly all of our patients surveyed have reported improvements with little to no pain/discomfort or problems with mobility or doing their usual activities, compared to before repair.
It is worth noting that 8 weeks is very early in the wound remodelling phase, so symptoms will continue improving after this time.
It is also worth noting that many of our patients have significant medical problems that will impact their activity levels post hernia surgery, which is why we do not see 100% improvement.

At Hernia Clinic Hampshire, we take a number of steps to help you have a quick recovery and get the best long term results:
Our pioneering use of local anaesthetic and sedation is lower risk and gentler on the body. Patients typically walk out of the hospital the same day as their operation and post-surgery recovery is quicker.
Our post-surgery rehabilitation program and use of hernia supports promote early symptom management and return to activity, which can improve return to activity in the short term and repair results in the long term.
The mesh we use and the extensive experience of our consultant surgeon lower the risks of recurrence and long term pain.
