Private Epigastric Hernia Treatment

Whether you’re seeking treatment for, diagnosis of, or advice about an epigastric hernia, Hernia Clinic Hampshire is here to help. We are experts in epigastric hernia repairs, and in helping patients of varying ages, situations, and health conditions.

What Is an Epigastric Hernia

Illustration showing where epigastric hernias are located.

Epigastric hernias occur halfway between the bottom of the breastbone and the belly button. There is no natural weakness here, but damage to this site is a common cause. These hernias can push through one or both layers of connective tissue.

If they only come through one layer they can still cause symptoms the same way a hernia can.

Important distinction: Diastasis (Divarication) Recti

This occurs when the space between the 2 rectus abdominus muscles is widened by increased intra-abdominal content. This is not a hernia. It’s often related to pregnancy or weight gain. Some plastic surgeons repair these for cosmetic reasons, but most cases improve with core exercise programmes and weight loss, making surgery unnecessary for the majority. We do not repair these.

Epigastric Hernia Symptoms

Epigastric hernia symptoms can include:

  • A small lump in the upper middle area of the abdomen (above the bellybutton and below the breastbone)
  • Aching and pulling that worsens with activity and eases with rest
  • Lump may reduce when lying down
  • Some have a lump but no other symptoms

We advise you consider repair if symptoms interfere with your usually activities and get in the way of enjoying daily life. If you do not yet need or want surgery, an abdominal support belt can help reduce the hernia and manage symptoms.

Epigastric Hernia Surgery Options

We recommend and repair epigastric hernias under local anaesthetic and sedation, in much the same way as a paraumbilical hernia and with very similar results. This approach makes surgery gentler on the body and more accessible to all ages and health conditions. We also offer laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery under a general anaesthetic.

Recovery After Epigastric Hernia Surgery

We do everything to make recovery after epigastric hernia surgery easier, including the us of our local anaesthetic and sedation approach wherever appropriate. The majority of patients are back to light activities during the first few days and back to their usual activities within the first 4 weeks after surgery.

You will receive extensive guidance from our team on how to improve your recovery, timelines to returning to activity, and resources such as our Post-Surgery Advice Leaflet and Hernia Recovery Programme.

How Much Does Epigastric Hernia Surgery Cost?

We offer competitively priced all-inclusive epigastric hernia surgery packages starting from £4,800. This includes hospital, Consultant Surgeon, Consultant anaesthetist, our Hernia Rehabilitation Exercises, and your post-surgery follow-up.

We accept all medical insurance providers, and the hospitals offer private financing if needed.
