Can You Prevent Hernia Recurrence?

Lowering the Risks of Recurrence

How we improve Post Hernia Surgery Results

The risk of inguinal hernia reccurence is reported as 3.2% in specialist hernia centres and higher in non specialist centres. The risk of ventral and incisional hernia recurrence is similar. Further, this risk can be higher for women. A number of factors influence this, from the hernia’s size or the technique/mesh used, to patient factors as described below.

At Hernia Clinic Hampshire, there are a number of steps our experienced surgeon takes to decrease the risk of recurrence and thus provide you with better long-term results after your repair.

The Mesh We Use

Hernia mesh repair has a much lower risk of recurrence than suture only repair.

We use a self-fixating mesh for open repairs. This particular kind of mesh embeds well with the surrounding tissues, generating strong new connective tissue to heal the abdominal wall, and distributes tension evenly across the surgical site.

The embedding teeth on the mesh dissolve after 6 months helping to create a comfortable repair.

The Technique That We Use

Depending on the type of hernia you have, it’s size, and (for ventral/incisional hernias) whether or not you have had a previous repair, different techniques might be better for you.

There’s no once size fits all – our highly experienced surgeon devices and discusses a bespoke treatment plan for you. Read more here about the different ways we repair hernias.

Our Highly Experienced Surgeon

Risk of recurrence is influenced by the number of cases a surgeon or centre has. High volume surgeons and high volume centres have lower recurrence rates. Essentially, the more experienced a surgeon and team are, the lower the risk of recurrence is. For local anaesthetic repairs we can test your repair is strong whilst you are having it repaired.

Hernia Clinic Hampshire’s Consultant Surgeon has repaired over 2,000 hernias!
